Rain gun irrigation: five checks for more even coverage
Simple setup and field checks that help a rotating sprinkler apply water more consistently.
A rain gun sprinkler can cover a broad area with relatively simple equipment, but good results depend on pressure, spacing, wind and maintenance.
1. Confirm the connection
Use properly sized, secure fittings and inspect seals before pressurizing the line. Leaks reduce pressure and make rotation less stable.
2. Observe the rotation
The sprinkler should move consistently without sticking or racing. Irregular motion can create wet and dry bands across the field.
3. Account for wind
Strong wind distorts the water pattern. Irrigate during calmer periods where possible and adjust sprinkler spacing to maintain overlap.
4. Check overlap
Uniform irrigation depends on adjacent patterns overlapping. Place simple catch containers across the irrigated area to compare application depth.
5. Maintain the nozzle and mechanism
Sediment and debris affect flow. Flush lines, clean the nozzle and inspect moving parts routinely.
Let the crop and soil guide timing
A reliable sprinkler applies water; it does not decide when the field needs it. Combine crop observation with root-zone moisture readings to avoid both stress and unnecessary irrigation.
